WNWN Food Labs, the first company to introduce cocoa-free chocolate to the market, released today's world's first chocolate easter egg.
It measures 15cm high by 10cm wide, weighs approximately 100 grams, and has nutty, malty notes with a dulce de leche finish.
“Having launched the first cocoa-free chocolate products, we recognised an opportunity to create the first, and currently only, cocoa-free choc egg, to show that Easter should be celebrated ethically and sustainably,” said WNWN CTO Dr. Johnny Drain. “While this is not yet a consumer product, due to our scale-up efforts, you shouldn’t be surprised to see the Wegg in baskets next year.”
Winners will also receive a certificate of authenticity. (Winner must reside in the UK.) The Wegg will not be for sale but will be randomly awarded to an Instagram follower via a contest from Tuesday, 3 April, until 23:59 Easter Monday, 10 April 2023.
WNWN uses a proprietary fermentation process to transform widely available plant-based ingredients like cereals and legumes into cocoa-free chocolate that tastes, melts, snaps, and bakes just like conventional chocolate. Based on an internal lifecycle analysis, a cocoa-free WNWN product produces 80% fewer carbon emissions than conventional chocolate. In addition, it is vegan, caffeine-free, gluten-free, palm oil-free, and lower in sugar than comparable products.
There are growing concerns among consumers about deforestation, habitat destruction, and unfair labor practices in conventional chocolate supply chains. For example, Ivory Coast and Ghana, which grow three-quarters of the world's cocoa, are estimated to employ more than a million child laborers.
Changing climates, including rising temperatures and reduced rainfall, are also affecting cocoa crops, which will inevitably cause chocolate shortages in the near future.
WNWN announced last November that it would build a new facility in London to increase its production space by eightfold. As of February, the company raised $5.6 million (£4.5m), aiming to launch its chocolate range in the UK retail market by the end of 2023. If you want to taste WNWN, you can find it at Waim! Bar in London only direct to consumer.
