Solar Foods has taken a significant step toward commercializing its novel protein, Solein, in the United States by achieving self-affirmed GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) status. This marks a pivotal moment for the Finnish food technology company as it prepares to introduce Solein—a revolutionary protein produced from air and electricity—to one of the world’s largest markets. The achievement of self-affirmed GRAS status opens the door for the product’s sale in the U.S., pending further regulatory steps such as the registration of Solar Foods' production facility and compliance with FDA requirements.

What is Solein?

Solein is a groundbreaking protein produced through a unique fermentation process that utilizes carbon dioxide, air, and renewable electricity. This innovative bioprocess results in a highly sustainable protein with a minimal environmental footprint. Compared to conventional animal proteins, Solein’s production generates just 1% of the emissions of meat and 20% of those from plant proteins. The protein is nutritionally rich, containing 65-70% protein, 5-8% fat, and up to 15% dietary fiber, along with iron and B vitamins. It can be used in a wide range of food products, from baked goods and beverages to meat and dairy alternatives.

The GRAS Status Approval Process

In the United States, new food ingredients like Solein must undergo rigorous regulatory scrutiny before being approved for sale. One pathway to market entry is obtaining GRAS status, which certifies that the ingredient is considered safe for its intended use based on scientific evidence and expert review. Solar Foods achieved self-affirmed GRAS status after conducting extensive scientific research and publishing safety data in peer-reviewed journals. A qualified panel of experts evaluated Solein’s safety across various food categories, which formed the basis for the GRAS designation.

While self-affirmed GRAS status is a significant milestone, Solar Foods plans to pursue a "No Questions Letter" from the FDA by 2026. This additional step, known as notified GRAS status, would further enhance the product’s credibility and broaden its marketability in the U.S., as some customers may prefer or require this certification.

Path to U.S. Market Entry

The next critical step for Solar Foods involves registering its production facility, Factory 01, with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This process includes creating a comprehensive food safety plan to ensure compliance with all relevant regulations. Once the facility is registered, Solar Foods aims to begin exporting Solein to the U.S. and anticipates that commercial sales could start by the end of 2024.

This move into the U.S. market follows Solein's first regulatory success in Singapore, where it received novel food approval in 2022. In Singapore, Solein has already made its way into various products, including ice cream, restaurant meals, and a chocolate bar in collaboration with the Finnish company Fazer.

Global Expansion and Future Plans

The U.S. market is only one part of Solar Foods' broader global strategy. In addition to its U.S. efforts, Solar Foods has filed for regulatory approval in the European Union and the United Kingdom. These markets are known for stringent food safety and novel food regulations, and success there could pave the way for further global expansion. Solar Foods also sees GRAS status in the U.S. as a potential gateway to markets like Japan, which do not require novel food approvals but may look favorably on U.S. certifications.

By 2026, Solar Foods expects not only to solidify its presence in the U.S. but also to begin scaling up production with Factory 02, which will have 50 to 100 times the capacity of Factory 01. This expansion will be critical as the company seeks to meet growing global demand for sustainable, alternative proteins.

Conclusion

The self-affirmed GRAS status for Solein is a crucial step for Solar Foods as it aims to disrupt the global protein market with its environmentally friendly and nutritionally rich product. As the company moves closer to commercializing Solein in the U.S. and other key markets, it is poised to play a significant role in the future of sustainable food production. With the potential to drastically reduce the environmental impact of protein production, Solein represents a promising solution for a more sustainable global food system.
