In an endeavor to tackle climate-related challenges in agriculture, Smart Green, a Jordan-based startup, is taking bold steps to digitally revolutionize traditional farming practices. Founded by Mohammad Zeinati, an electrical engineer turned agritech entrepreneur, Smart Green has positioned itself as a key player in sustainable agriculture, focusing particularly on water-saving technologies.
Background Journey to Agritech
"Who would have thought I'd end up in agriculture?" Zeinati pondered, recalling his volunteer work at a lemon tree farm with the Arab Group for the Protection of Nature in Jordan. That experience was a transformative moment that steered him towards developing hydroponics and agritech projects. During this phase, he recognized the pivotal role of irrigation systems in agriculture but also identified gaps in cost-efficiency and water-saving features in existing systems, predominantly imported from international companies.
Fertigo: A Solution to Water Scarcity
To address these challenges, Zeinati launched Smart Green in 2020, initially in Jordan and later expanding to Canada. The company harnesses Industry 4.0 technologies like artificial intelligence, cloud computing, internet of things, and machine learning to modernize agriculture. One of its standout products is Fertigo, a smart irrigation and fertigation system specifically designed to combat water scarcity.
"Fertigo is unique in being the first irrigation system to offer services in Arabic, broadening our reach across Jordan and the wider MENA region," Zeinati noted.
Conserving Water, Ensuring Food Security
With around 70% of global water consumption being allocated to agriculture, Smart Green aims to significantly reduce this figure and make more water available for personal use. Zeinati expressed, "Our ambition is to develop technology that doesn't just solve immediate issues but also contributes to long-term food security through water conservation."
Smart Green was selected for the second edition of PepsiCo’s Greenhouse Accelerator Program: MENA Sustainability Edition, underscoring its promising impact on sustainable agriculture in the Middle East and beyond.
As the world grapples with climate change and depleting resources, Smart Green's innovative approach to traditional agricultural challenges offers a hopeful path to sustainable, resource-efficient farming practices.
