Ohly’s new X-SEED line, an addition to its well-established portfolio, includes X-SEED® KAT Advanced, X-SEED® KAT Plus, and X-SEED® Carbo Peptone. These bionutrients function as versatile nitrogen sources, enabling high yields and increased productivity across diverse fermentation applications. With a balance of amino acids, peptides, vitamins, minerals, and growth factors, the X-SEED line provides a complete nutrient profile, adaptable to specific fermentation needs across applications like cultivated meats and protein-rich dairy alternatives. According to Abhishek Somani, Ohly’s Bionutrients Business Development Manager, the creation of these bionutrients involved a cross-functional team of fermentation specialists, biochemists, and process engineers. “The flexibility of X-SEED allows us to adapt to diverse production hosts, supporting each industry’s specific requirements while maximizing output and cost-efficiency,” Somani explains.


A State-of-the-Art Fermentation Facility in Hamburg: Efficiency Meets Sustainability


At the heart of Ohly’s latest innovations is its new fermentation facility in Hamburg, designed to address both capacity needs and environmental impact. This plant, which will increase Ohly’s production capacity by up to 50%, is expected to be among Europe’s most advanced fermentation facilities. It uses a heat recovery system to repurpose thermal energy, enough to power nearly 800 homes annually, and integrates automated systems for ergonomic, hygienic, and safe production.


Key innovations include advanced hygiene standards for sustainable cleaning, and the use of “big bags” instead of smaller traditional ones, reducing packaging waste significantly. These developments are part of Ohly's larger decarbonization roadmap, with an ambitious target to operate a carbon-neutral Hamburg site by 2030. By conserving energy and optimizing resources, Ohly’s new facility aligns with global sustainability goals while maintaining the highest standards of product quality and safety.


Strategic Partnerships and Global Reach


With its roots in Hamburg dating back to 1836, Ohly has grown from a local yeast producer to a global supplier. Recently, the company expanded its partnership with Caldic to distribute yeast-based ingredients across North America. This strategic partnership enhances Ohly’s ability to meet regional demands for natural and minimally processed ingredients, aligning with growing consumer preferences for sustainable food sources.


In the U.S. Midwest, where clean-label and flavor optimization are key to consumer satisfaction, Ohly’s yeast-based solutions—including taste enhancers and off-flavor masking agents—are well-positioned to support manufacturers. Caldic’s distribution network and R&D expertise will further enable Ohly to address specific needs in food formulation, providing flavor and nutrient customization for diverse applications.
