French Biotech Standing Ovation Secures €3.75 Million in Series A+ Funding to Accelerate Animal-Free Dairy Revolution

In a major leap forward for the precision fermentation industry, Paris-based biotech company Standing Ovation has raised €3.75 million in Series A+ funding. The funds will be used to fuel the growth of the company’s flagship product, Advanced Casein, a protein ingredient aimed at revolutionizing the dairy sector with animal-free, precision-fermented alternatives. This new capital, which will enable expansion in the USA by 2025, builds on an impressive financial foundation, bringing the total raised by the company to €23 million in just four years.


Expansion of Funding and Partnership


The recent €3.75 million funding is part of Standing Ovation's Series A+ round, which adds to the €12 million raised in the original Series A round in 2022. The company’s backers include some of the most prominent names in venture capital and the food technology industry, such as Astanor Ventures, Peakbridge, Seventure, Good Startup, Big Idea Ventures, and the industrial giant Bel Group. In addition, the French government and Bpifrance have contributed €3 million to accelerate the production of fermented caseins, signaling significant public and private support for this innovative company.


Standing Ovation’s precision-fermented casein offers the same nutritional and functional properties as traditional dairy-based casein, but without the environmental and ethical concerns of animal farming. This breakthrough ingredient has the potential to disrupt not only the dairy industry but the entire global agri-food market.

Standing Ovation has positioned itself as the leader in fermentative casein production, a fact highlighted by Laetitia de Panafieu, a representative from Astanor Ventures who sits on the company’s Supervisory Board. “We are proud to support Standing Ovation, the only player mastering fermentative casein production, which will soon produce on an industrial scale to meet the needs of the agri-food industry and consumers,” de Panafieu commented.

In the first half of 2024 alone, the sector raised €164 million in funding, surpassing the total for all of 2023. A New Leadership Vision: Yvan Chardonnens Appointed CEO


Alongside its funding announcement, Standing Ovation also introduced a significant leadership change: the appointment of Yvan Chardonnens as CEO. Chardonnens, who brings over 30 years of experience in the global B2B sector, is expected to lead the company into its next phase of growth. His previous roles at companies like Oterra, Firmenich, and International Flavors & Fragrances (IFF) have equipped him with the expertise to scale the company’s production and expand its market presence internationally.


Chardonnens praised the company’s achievements under its co-founder, Romain Chayot, stating: “Under Romain’s leadership, Standing Ovation has accomplished key technological, operational, and financial milestones in just four years to be ready for its next phase of industrial-scale growth.”


Chardonnens’ appointment signals Standing Ovation’s readiness to move from an innovation-driven startup to an industrial-scale producer capable of supplying the global food industry. His experience with plant-based ingredients at Roquette and his leadership at Barry Callebaut, a global leader in chocolate and cocoa, further indicate his ability to scale sustainable solutions for the food sector.


The Case for Animal-Free Casein


Standing Ovation’s core product, Advanced Casein, is the result of cutting-edge precision fermentation technology. Casein is a critical protein in dairy products, providing the texture and mouthfeel that consumers expect from cheese, milk, and other dairy-based foods. Co-founder Romain Chayot, who has now taken on the role of managing director, expressed his optimism for the future: “After four years of research and innovation to develop our manufacturing and industrial production process, now is the time to accelerate to mass-produce and distribute Advanced Casein® in the global agri-food market.”
