Israeli microalgae protein innovator Brevel has announced a milestone partnership with The Central Bottling Company (CBC Group), Israel’s largest beverage conglomerate, to co-develop a new generation of functional beverages and dairy alternatives enriched with Brevel’s microalgae-derived ingredients. Under a 10-year development and commercialization agreement, Brevel will supply CBC with its algae-based protein, functional oils, and bioactive antioxidants, advancing the companies’ shared vision of sustainable, plant-based nutrition.
Brevel’s proprietary technology represents a breakthrough in microalgae cultivation, uniting light exposure and sugar fermentation in a novel indoor bioreactor system. This process allows for the efficient production of high-value, nutrient-rich microalgae at an affordable cost, without relying on genetic modification. Traditionally, fermentation is conducted in complete darkness, but Brevel has pioneered a hybrid approach that integrates photosynthesis with fermentation, creating a scalable, sustainable, and cost-effective alternative protein source.
The result is a white, neutral-tasting protein powder with a 60-70% protein concentration, ideal for enhancing the nutritional and functional profile of plant-based foods. Brevel’s protein acts as a natural booster, capable of replicating the textures, flavors, and behavior of animal proteins while maintaining a clean label and superior sensory experience.
A Strategic Partnership to Drive Innovation
For CBC Group, the partnership with Brevel aligns with its commitment to continuous innovation in F&B. The company, which holds the Israeli franchise for Coca-Cola, Carlsberg, and Müller, as well as leading regional juice and dairy brands, also has a strong footprint in Eastern Europe and the MENA region. CBC’s investment in Brevel—part of the startup’s $20 million seed-funding round—underscores its belief in microalgae as a transformative ingredient for future food and beverage applications.
Yonatan Golan, Brevel’s co-founder and CEO, emphasized the significance of the collaboration:
“We feel extremely fortunate to collaborate with and enjoy the support of such a major force in the beverage arena, not only in Israel but also internationally. This co-venture will be instrumental in keeping Brevel at the forefront of developments in food-tech and climate-tech.”
Lihi Rothschild, Head of Innovation at CBC Group, echoed this sentiment, highlighting how Brevel’s technology opens new doors for product development: “As we pursue our strategy of continuous innovation to deliver superior products that respond to evolving trends and customer demands, partnering with Brevel is a natural fit. Their groundbreaking approach allows us to explore new categories and solutions, expanding the range of exciting consumer applications we can offer.”
Scaling Up for Commercial Impact
Brevel is already making strides toward large-scale production. In June 2024, the company inaugurated its first commercial factory in Southern Israel, equipped to produce hundreds of tons of microalgae protein powder annually. This facility is expected to meet the initial wave of demand from CBC and other partners, paving the way for the widespread adoption of algae-based ingredients across the food and beverage industries.
With health-conscious consumers increasingly seeking sustainable, plant-based alternatives, Brevel and CBC Group are well-positioned to drive category expansion in functional beverages, dairy alternatives, and beyond. As food-tech solutions continue to reshape the market, this partnership marks an important step in the journey toward a more sustainable, nutritious, and scalable protein future.
